Younger seekers flee the chaos of the digital world instead turning to ancient Benedictine wisdom for meaning, balance and peace

In a world consumed by constant noise and digital distractions, a growing number of younger individuals are finding themselves searching for something deeper. The rush of modern life, amplified by the relentless pace of online culture, has left many yearning for real meaning, perspective and a sense of inner peace.

That’s where we come in. At our Benedictine monastery and others across the UK, we are seeing an inspiring rise in younger male and female guests - individuals who are choosing to step away from the chaos and embrace the ancient, proven rhythms of monastic life. They’re seeking the timeless wisdom of our Benedictine tradition, looking for a life rooted in stability, prayer and simplicity -an antidote to the overwhelming noise of today’s digital and generally challenging age they live in.

More and more, young seekers are visiting our monastic guesthouse at St Augustine's Abbey, Chilworth near Guildford, staying for a few days in exchange for a donation and finding the stillness, peace and perspective they’ve perhaps been longing for. This isn’t just happening here - it’s a growing trend reported across other Benedictine monastic communities. Many monasteries are welcoming young people who are rediscovering the profound balance that ancient monastic life offers for both the lay person and those seeking the religious life.

If you know someone searching for balance, meaning or a moment of silence amidst the frenzy, we invite you to share our story. We open our doors to all who wish to step away from the chaos and immerse themselves in the tranquility and spiritual depth that the Benedictine way of life offers.
