Yes, Benedictine monks give and receive Christmas presents
As a possible online first and within the bounds of the Rule of St Benedict, we can let you know that, yes, after Midnight Mass and Christmas Day Mass, Christmas gifts are exchanged by and with our Benedictine monks in our community, with family and sometimes with friends and benefactors - always simply, gratefully and without excess. These are not possessions to cling to, but signs of affection, charity and shared joy.
At St Augustine’s Abbey, Chilworth, Christmas gifts are received with profound gratitude.
Whether it is something handmade, something useful, a book, a kind note, or even a modest token of chocolate, we accept each gift as an expression of goodwill and fellowship. We are especially grateful for gifts that support our life of prayer, work, hospitality and service.
Monks also take delight in giving presents - to one another, to those they love and to those who support our monastic mission. For us, the heart of gift giving is never the price tag, but the intention, the gratitude and the blessing of community.
This Christmas, we want to say a sincere thank you to all who remember us.
In a world that often feels hurried and divided, even the smallest gift reminds us that we are part of a much larger human and spiritual family.
For every kindness, we are truly grateful.
You are remembered in our prayers.
