The icon depicts Our Lady of Perpetual Help robed in black and gold. Black for mourning the future Passion of her son, gold for the glory of his Resurrection from the dead. She cradles her son had he embraces her neck and presses his cheek against hers, seeking comfort from her. He twists his left foot as he forsees his distant passion. Displayed along the top of the icon are scenes from the life of Our Lady. To left and right are her Annunciation and Coronation. Two stars adorn Our Lady's black robe, which recall Queen Esther interceding before the King for the life of her people. Just as Mary does for us before God. A very rich inspiration to prayer.
