Product Details

Saint Anthony of Padua (1195-1231) was a Franciscan friar and a renowned preacher, known for his deep spirituality and dedication to the poor. He was born in Lisbon, Portugal, and died in Arcella, Italy. Canonized in 1232, he is celebrated as the patron saint of lost items, credited with numerous miracles involving lost people and things. His feast day is observed on June 13. Saint Anthony is venerated worldwide and is also recognized as a protector of sailors, travelers, and the poor. His teachings and life continue to inspire many within the Christian faith.

The story behind the depiction on the candle, is both fascinating and deeply spiritual. According to tradition, a wealthy benefactor once provided St. Anthony a place to stay for the night. In The Life of St. Anthony, published in 1895, this mystical event is narrated in detail. The benefactor witnessed St. Anthony in a state of ecstasy, kneeling in prayer and admiration. To his astonishment, he saw a beautiful child of extraordinary charm who was tenderly embracing St. Anthony.

The vision was so divine and filled with such affection that the benefactor recognized the child as Jesus Christ. It is said that Christ, in the form of this loving child, visited St. Anthony to console and bless him. This extraordinary encounter not only affirmed St. Anthony’s deep faith but also symbolized the special relationship he had with Jesus.

Artistic Depictions

Artists through the centuries have captured this mystical experience in their works, showing St. Anthony holding or interacting with the Child Jesus. These depictions serve as a visual reminder of the saint’s deep spirituality and his intimate connection with Christ. The imagery often portrays St. Anthony with a serene and loving expression, emphasizing the peace and divine joy he felt during the encounter.

Spiritual Significance

For many believers, the image of St. Anthony holding the Child Jesus symbolizes innocence, purity, and the close relationship between humanity and the divine. It is a visual representation of the saint’s role as a spiritual guide and his ability to intercede on behalf of those who seek his help.

The depiction of St. Anthony of Padua holding the Child Jesus is more than just a religious image; it is a testament to a spiritual experience that highlights the saint’s deep connection with Christ. This powerful symbol continues to inspire and comfort the faithful, reminding them of the divine love and consolation that St. Anthony experienced.

The candle burns for seven days, outside with the golden cover, inside without the cap, for safe, continuous burning.

It measures 7cm diameter, 24 cm long.

'Then are they truly monks when they live by the labour of their own hands'
Rule of St Benedict, Chapter 48

Since the foundation of St Augustine’s Abbey in Ramsgate in 1856 and since we relocated to Chilworth in Surrey in 2011, the Benedictine monks have sought various ways to support themselves.

In 2004, one of the monks took possession of a colony of bees which became a well established monastic apiary with a number of hives. Our delicious organic honey continues to sell well subject to availability (although demand always exceeds yield).

In 2007, a novice monk suggested making traditional beeswax furniture polish, as a way of using up the surplus beeswax from our apiary. Sanctuary Polish is made using genuine turpentine, following a traditional recipe which is sure to nourish and protect all manner of home furnishings from dining room tables to parquet floors.

After several months, a friend of the monastery suggested making a beeswax lip balm. Although some of the monks had never heard of using beeswax for cosmetic purposes, a recipe was soon discovered and production of Sanctuary Balm began. A few years on, the monks currently offer a range of seven different flavoured 25ml beeswax lip balms, which not only moisturise and offer relief for dry, sore or chapped lips but also provide a long lasting savour thanks to the high grade organic essential oils used in the preparation.

In March 2008, the monks began preparing Sanctuary Skin Cream, a moisturising hand and skin cream which contains a blend of organic oils, beeswax, cocoa butter and aloe vera juice. The cream is presented in 50ml  containers and is available in honey & rose, lavender, coconut, vanilla and natural unscented.

According to supply and demand, we sometimes use organic beeswax in the production process from other trusted sources.

In addition to the monastic products highlighted above, one of our new monks makes Chilworth Rosary Beads of cord.

There are also a number of further items available from our online shop which, although not made by the monks of our monastery, we feel may be of particular interest to people looking at this web shop. We welcome any comments and feedback regarding the range and quality of our produce.
