This Holy Family wooden icon cross, rich in symbolism, depicts the child Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Mary is robed in blue, the colour of divinity, because she bore the divine son of God. Three golden stars on her robe remind us she is the 'Star of the sea' to whom we can turn, whenever we feel a need to ask her intercession. Esther the Queen in the Old Testament, whose name means 'star'. also interceded before the King. Jesus is robed in white, symbolising His humanity, and in red, symbolising the blood He shed for our salvation. Either side of the main picture are depictions of the Nativity of Jesus, with another star pointing Him out to the wise men from the East, and His Presentation in the temple to Simeon the 'just and devout man', who recognises Jesus as the Saviour of the human kind. At the top are depictions of Mary's Annunciation, Dormition, and two pictures showing the love between Mary and Joseph.
